How The Wax Life Chose Me: My Esthetics Journey

Updated: Jan 2, 2024

Becoming an esthetician is a choice fueled by a combination of passion, a desire to boost others’ confidence and an innate fascination with the world of beauty and skincare.

It’s more than just a job - it’s a way to make a positive impact on people’s lives helping them feel comfortable and beautiful in their own skin.

My way into esthetics was an unexpected twist in my beauty journey but it quickly became a path I couldn’t resist.

Since middle school, I've always been into all things beauty - hair, makeup, and fashion.

You would constantly find me immersed in magazine such as Eastbay, dELia*s, Girlfriends LA, and Teen Vogue scanning the pages and circling the items I planned to beg my parents to buy me.

But by the time I entered high school, hair had become the central focus of my beauty interests.

In the 9th grade I taught myself how to do my own hair. From flat twists, to Individuals (now called Box Braids), and classic french braids.

It came so naturally to me as though I had tapped into a skill passed down through generations connecting me to that of my ancestors.

Reflecting on it now, I find it rather impressive considering YouTube wasn't around as a convenient resource at that time.

By my sophomore year a lot of my classmates became my clients and almost every other weekend I was booked and busy. Lol

The satisfaction they expressed was nothing short of heartwarming.

Seeing their smiles reflected in the mirror as the posed with their new hairdo filled me with joy and a sense of accomplishment.

It was my first taste of entrepreneurship.

After high school I went straight into the workforce and quickly realized that entrepreneurship was my true calling.

The conventional 9-to-5 didn't quite match my aspirations for independence and creativity.

For years my close friends and family always suggested to me that I should pursue a career in cosmetology.

So in 2015, I finally took their advice and explored what options the beauty industry had to offer.

I toured many cosmetology schools in the Los Angeles area:

  • Universal Beauty College - Los Angeles, Ca

  • Pacific Beauty College- Los Angeles, Ca

  • Marinello School of Beauty - Inglewood, Ca

  • Aveda - Westwood, Ca

  • Paul Mitchell, The school - Pasadena

  • LA Trade Tech - Downtown Los Angeles

  • Santa Monica College - Santa Monica

...and many more, but none really fit my work schedule nor my pockets.

Palace Beauty College (Now called Los Angeles College of Aesthetics)

It wasn't until I visited Palace Beauty College, Now called Los Angeles College Aesthetics, that changed EVERYTHING!

As I was guided through the school halls I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and inspiration growing within me.

It became increasingly clear that THIS was the place where I could turn my dreams into a reality.

As the tour was coming to an end, our last stop was Esthetics Classroom and they were covering hair removal.

Now, I got my eyebrows waxed regularly at my local nail salon. (Eww, I know).

But the students were waxing their legs, arms, and underarms.

I looked to the instructor and asked “People get those areas waxed?”

She replied “Yes, Brazilians are also very popular!

With a confused look I responded “Brazilians”?

“Yeah, it's a wax service when you remove all pubic hair from the front and back.”

“WHAT? I was unaware that people got their vaginas waxed let alone their whole body!”

After my tour, I went straight home to my computer to look more into the world of waxing!

Youtube was my gateway offering a ton of tutorials and insights into the art of waxing.

It introduce me to Stepanie Laynes, Lori Nestore, Lydia Jordane, and Jessa Roberts who specialize in sugaring.

I was sold. After a couple of weeks of giving it some serious thought, I made up my mind.

I wanted to become an esthetician, but more specifically, a Wax Specialist.

The world of waxing had completely captivated me and I was ready to dive headfirst into this exciting field.

And the rest is history.

Choosing to become an esthetician was a pivotal decision in my life.

It's not just a career- it's a lifestyle.

I wake up every day excited to work in a field that continues to amaze me.

The world of waxing is dynamic and ever-evolving, and I'm here for it.

Ready to offer the best service, share a smile with my clients, and make each waxing session a memorable experience.

From that moment of revelation during the school tour to where I stand today, I've never looked back, and I can't wait to see where this exciting journey takes me next.
